...so Marty Neilan had this great-condition hard case for sale...an unusual-dimensions case for someone with an unusual instrument.

I put my friend (who owns just such an instrument) in touch with Marty, he (one of "the good guys") paid Marty over his ask price - as Marty (also a "good guy") was planning on donating a portion of the proceeds to charity, I arranged for Marty to drop it off with a friend of mine - in Marty's metropolitan area, I passed by that friend's house (on another tuba errand), I picked up the case, took it back to blokeplace, the person who bought the case (a Mississippian) was in Memphis (playing an Easter gig - one mile from my Easter gig) on Easter Sunday - as we had simultaneous Easter gigs, we (me and the case-buyer) met after church, I handed off the case, and he headed back to Mississippi.

We can make stuff like this work.
This time, it cost me ZERO more fuel (nor - really - any more significant time) than I was going to consume anyway.

...so @martyneilan, here's a picture of 84 #1 (referring back to the "Miraphone 84-B twin-spin" Repairs and Modifications forum thread) - an odd-dimensions instrument fitting nicely into your formerly-owned odd-dimensions case...with you getting a good settlement, the buyer paying NO shipping charges, and me (and a guy in Marty's metro area) having done a couple of very easy-to-execute favors.

The only thing, @martyneilan, that seems to be "tight" is the fairly tall "keel" (missing, when they bought the instrument) that the owner of this instrument choose from my box-o-keels (ie. "wow...this one's cool !") - which is pretty tall.

He's letting that keel mash into that bottom bow pad for a while - to see what happens, before he'll consider any possible alteration of that pad.

I belong to a group that restores and uses vintage woodworking machinery. My 500lb, 1950 Delta Unisaw (tablesaw) is on the small end in that group. 1000lbs hardy raises an eyebrow. They do this sort of thing quite a bit and those machines are obviously a pain to load on and off trucks/trailers or even from one truck bed to another.

If they can do it, we can do it with measly little tubas.

I’m good for occasional trips from SoCal to mid-upper California...

Im currently waiting on a brand new tuba that traveled half way across the planet, to be thwarted by the destination depot 20 miles from me who refuse to put it on a truck (unless they lost it) even though its been offloaded for over 2 weeks.

Never underestimate incompetence, passive aggression, and phony excuses for simply "not gonna do it unless I feel like it" post pandemic.

Everybody feels like they need a birthday cake to show up to work now, and another cake to do something.

Make sure your stuff is insured. Nobody in the US is going to do anything for you, UPS, FEDEX, DHL or the US postal service or the airlines or buses.

If the package is *big* and *fragile*, you will have to use a specialized shipper, and then MAYBE it will get there.

As for this friend help friend thing, well..good luck

You have publicly accused Wessex of fraud for failing to send you a tuba that cost almost four grand.

Now you say that a shipping company has a tuba of yours that they refuse to put on a truck.

So which is it?

You have managed to open the door to your own, personal libel suit in only four posts.
