Eastman Piston F

Post by russiantuba »

I played the Eastman Piston F today, as it was recently released as a prototype.

It is a .689 bore I believe. My Gronitz PF 125 is a .748” in comparison but the horns played similar in response, and tuning and color. I use a blokepiece Solo #0, and I would probably go up to a #1, as the horn sounded a little veiled due to what I think is the tighter throat. This has been the first Eastman tuba I have thought played very well. Not enough to sell my Gronitz by far, but it offers an option for those wanting a good piston F

In terms of size, design, sound, etc., is it comparable to anything currently available? MW2250, Miraphone Petrushka, Grontiz P125...?

It felt like my Gronitz but the bow seemed a bit higher, but around the same size as it/Petrushka. Sound, strikingly probably like a Petrushka/Gronitz. Hard to tell with only one mouthpiece, but it did have decent color and depth
