I’ve heard some really good brass quintet arrangements whereby the rhythm is supplied by enhancing in the inner parts.

I can write good arrangements, but >> I’m lazy <<, and also I have to write them by hand, because I never bought or learned how to use music writing programs. I really don’t need a playback feature to know how something is going to sound, so I suspect me scribbling dots on staves might not be much slower than using a program… although my manuscript obviously won’t look as good as the end result of using one of those programs.

There is a good arrangement of Mission Impossible arranged by John Wasson and published by Hal Leonard.

There is a great arrangement of Secret Agent Man by Charlie Peterson.

Although newer, there is a good arrangement by Gary Slechta of The Simpsons.

For a lot of music like this, my quintet has added a drummer.

The “Theme from Dallas” as arranged for the Dallas Brass is pretty good. Not what you’re looking for, but a solid piece with audience appeal.

I’m just sort of thinking about that type of music in general. If there are catchy ones that are done well, I’d be interested in hearing what the sources are.
If some of the arrangers are sophisticated enough to have electronic sound samples online, of course that’s interesting too.

Seb Skelly seems to be good at knocking out brass arrangements of a lot of popular tunes. If you don't find any you like, it might be worth contacting him. I've emailed him a bit for adjustments on a couple of his arrangements, and he responded and got them to me PDQ. He has a really good ear for how things can be arranged for brass.

We’ve played a number of his arrangements, and they’ve all been solid. I particularly like his simple but rather sophisticated arrangement of Norah Jones I Don’t Know Why.

Mission Impossible seems to have a simple enough harmony and structure – yet captivating enough – whereby it should make a good arrangement… Particularly if some of the quintet members are good jazz soloists, and the two primary measures of the bass line can be repeated over and over and opened up into solos.
