Name! That! Miraphone!

Post by kingrob76 »

Even after all these I'm still not as proficient at this as I used to be.

It's not a 188. It's not a 185 because the wrap is wrong for the 5th. That leaves a 186 or a 184 and my gut says 184 since the height of the 5th valve wrap seems right.

Also: damn fine playing with a lot of commercially available charts, and the swap of an alto sax for the french horn is interesting.

I’m guessing 186 based on relative size.

Bell is too big to be a 184. 186 gets my vote.

184 is much smaller.

Nice playing!

That's a 186 and it sounds great.

Instead of "what is it," how about "who is it?"

I'd love a 186CC right about now! :smilie6:

One thing Disney would have complete control over would be wardrobe.

' never grew accustomed to the 18" bells on the later-era 186 instruments.

That brand new 186 BBb that I ”happened to run into” a while back was a good tuba. I didn’t have it for enough time to do a decentreview video, but I had it for long enough to figure out a few things. It was easy to play, and you could play just about everything pretty well. BUT… I am NOT super-impressed with the 18 inch bell. The vintage sheet brass 16 inch models have better sound - they have the Miraphone mojo, whereas the new ones, although fine tubas, do not. I have also owned a new bell 186 CC, and I did not like it at all, whereas I love the blokespecial 186 CC with 16 inch bell and sheet brass.

YMMV, of course.

It’s a new-ish 17+ inch bell 186 CC. The 5th valve wrap which perplexes you is the factory wrap for the flat whole step fifth valve.

“New-ish” is pretty relative though. They’ve probably been building them that way for close to 20 years. I still think of those as kinda new.
