WTB: Bb tuba < $3000 for community band

Post by cameronlopez »

Hi all,

Wanting to pick up tuba to play in a community band. Looking for something < $3000 but cheaper is better. I don't have any hard and fast desires, just not a sousaphone or something difficult to play sitting down.

Thank you!

My Mack is easy to carry and sounds OK for a smaller group.

The Accent/VMI/B&S is more cumbersome but sounds better. :tuba:

Mack Brass may have them in stock, I shopped for months for the Accent.

:tuba:

I bought a horn from Mack Brass this year for precisely the same reason, with basically the same budget, and have been happy with it. if you're in road-trip territory to their warehouse in Petersburg, VA, you can probably save a few bucks that way (which is what I did) and get to try before you buy if you're not sure on which model you prefer.

FWIW the Miraphone "G170103" gig bag fits the Mack TU212 BBb like a glove, for when you realize the to comically oversized case they provide won't fit in many vehicles very well.

Dan Schneider (Indiana) has two horns either of which might work for you. I'd lean towards the 186.

Right! Good point. I am in the northern Virginia area. I appreciate the replies so far - I have been looking at Mack Brass but am leaning more towards a used instrument. I just might take a trip down to Mack Brass and test them out because it's not too far.

In the "Used Band Instruments for Sale" Facebook group, theres currently a Yamaha YBB-105 3/4 BBs up in Havertown, PA for $1500.

Check with the Mack folks before making the trip, since the warehouse is not regularly staffed, and to make sure they have what you want available.

The Army Tuba Conference in February. Would be a good place to look too, weather you have found one by then or not.
