Central Florida Community Arts (CFCArts) Symphony Orchestra wants YOU!

Central Florida Community Arts (CFCArts) Symphony Orchestra is looking for tuba players. Although labeled as a Orchestra, we have a large (and strong!) brass section and are closer to a massed Orchestra and Concert Band. Minimum age is 18, players must provide own instrument, with low annual dues (financial assistance is available). We are a 160 plus piece, no-audition group with a repertoire that ranges from Beatles, to Rossini and Copland, to The Planets and The Lord of the Rings. We have several concerts a year regularly playing for over 1,000 patrons at a time. Our most recent concert, Classic(al) Rock, was at Steinmetz Hall, Dr. Phillips Center in November, playing for 2,570 in 2 performances:

It's a hybrid, it is formally titled a Symphony Orchestra but the brass sections are staffed like a concert band.

Don't get hung up on labels.

1. The difference between the two types of ensembles is pretty important in this community.

2. It was a completely legitimate question.

3. The above-quoted response is something you might want to rephrase. In lacking vocal inflection, the attitude behind written words can easily be misinterpreted. For instance, I "heard" your above words as being rather smarmy and dismissive for someone's introduction to a community.

Apologies to all for any unintended offense by my careless choice of words, and thank you for the advice. Some have questioned how a group named as a "Symphonic Orchestra" can have more than one tuba, but "Concert Band" isn't accurate either because of the string sections. Thank you for your good wishes.

I watched the video. I suspect some here commented without watching it, so the explanation of your unusual ensemble was needed. I for one have never come across a group such as yours.

What is in the video (to others in this thread who did not watch it) is a full-ish symphony orchestra on the stage with a whole mess of winds and brass in the balcony above the stage. It is quite literally a symphony orchestra with a full band behind the strings. It is an interesting concept, including amplified rock instruments, too.

This is interesting.

My oldest daughter, a trumpet player, resisted listening to classical music. Music like what this group produces got her to give classical music a chance. She will listen to stuff that’s far more “traditional” now.

It does remind me of the 1979 album “I Am” by Earth, Wind, & Fire. Roger Bobo is listed in the liner notes.

Nonetheless, this would be an interesting experience for a young tuba player.

The little community group that the wife and I started playing with last year is sort of a combined Band and Orchestra - mainly due to shrinking enrollment from Covid, I believe. It's whatever winds and strings we can get. Occasionally jokes are made about how it's guaranteed that one half or the other of the ensemble will not like the key that whatever piece we're playing is in (winds vs strings). We've taken to calling this a "Borchestra".

Well...that has all the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the back of the head. Kind of Manheim Steamroller with people. I can see a few pieces with this in a program and we've done that, but I kept watching waiting for pieces that weren't head bangers. I couldn't imagine as a tuba player finding it musically rewarding competing with amplified guitars on every piece. We lose every time. Having listened to many of the pieces if I hadn't seen a tuba in this ensemble I wouldn't have known they were even in the group.

1. Exactly why we are trying to recruit and expand the tuba section!
2. The head-banger rock was the theme of this particular concert, we don't usually have a rock band sitting in. Other concert themes were: Symphonic Disney, Symphonic Cinema, Symphonic Passport, and our next concert will be Swing Music.
3. A large group like this might not be for everyone, but I have fun and find it exciting to be in the middle (okay, the back edge) of so much massed musical instruments. Any chance I get to play with others is reward for me.
