Sell A Tuba... not!

Post by Tim Jackson »

I know most folks sell a tuba because-
1. You found something you like better.
2. Can't afford more than 2 or 3.
3. Wife needs a new car. you need a new car!
4. need room.
5. too many tubas.

I finally have a little extra time to start "culling the herd" as I just don't need so many tubas, "out of room", "like to have some money to do other fun things" and most importantly "would really make the wife happy if a few horns went away".

My problem... the process always starts with good intentions. I have a horn not getting played for a few years then I get it out to freshen it up and... damn this thing plays good - I can't get rid of this one!

Today was the day. I got out my dear friend - 1960 CC 5U Miraphone. After a burn-in session of about 30 minutes - it hit me hard - I can't sell this thing right now. Most folks won't understand "point & shoot" until they have the mother of all "point & shoots" Funny, back in the day - every college kid and most pros had this horn. Sad that most folks today will not know this instrument.

I'm rotating the 186 back to my #1 for the next few weeks - Just for old time sake, and it plays sooooooooooooooo good.

Happy with too many!
TJ

That is 100% pure "tuba sexy" right there, man.

Keep it, as it would be next to impossible to replace this specific tuba. Sell something that can be more easily replaced, even if you happen to prefer it…

… because it can be replaced…

… while this one can't.

They were THE tuba everyone wanted back in the day!

Can’t see in the pictures, are they the old S-linkages, or have they been upgraded?

Having played 186s of that vintage, the main thing that hit me first is how quickly and effortlessly they respond.

Enjoy that old beast!

Now I’m wishing you would sell it. Look at that sweet long 5th valve!

Exactly why I was re-liking this horn this morning. Also, the slots are easy targets... meaning I was hitting many more notes without mishaps. I've been off the practice schedule for the last 5 months finishing a log cabin renovation on the family property in Shalimar. So my accuracy is needing help.
Tuba playing is a little off but I enjoyed churning out some woodwork. Here are a few pics - I tore out old paneling, hung sheetrock, made molding, stained to match the logs, and made a set of bifold doors. All yellow pine. Loved it but glad to be done.

It's a beauty! I'm hoping I will run into someone who has one of those and would trade for 4 Chinese horns that I have. I know - good luck with that! :tuba:

I've sold two remarkably fine ones.
Perhaps I'll keep the next one....??
