R&M Kaisertuba is Finally Home!

Post by Alebeard »

My 1930 R&M Kaisertuba has finally reached home after a long trip from Deutschland! Just got it back from the shop after getting the bell and lead tube soldered back on. I'll get it cleaned and polished up tomorrow and finally put some sound through her.
I am thoroughly impressed at how clean and dent free she is with the age! The quality and craftsmanship of this tuba is better than I have ever owned or played.
I promise to report back this weekend after I have had some time to play it.

Cheers,
Jared

She´s a true beauty.
Is that a gold brass bell on yellow brass body?

R&M ?

Has the valve section been replaced? The valves and linkages look pretty modern.

That looks like a solid piece of metal and should put out quite a sound. I think I might be jealous. Enjoy!

Reichel Markneukirchen. The valves are original but when the horn was gone through in 2019, miniball linkages were installed.

A few things in my experience:
* Don't try to muscle it like a big York-style 6/4 tuba. It won't go well.
* For me, big bowl-shaped mouthpieces work better
* It's going to take time to work out smoothness between notes, slurring, flexibility
* Don't try to muscle it. The bell is tall and way above your head. You ARE loud and you ARE being heard.
* I hope you'll be playing alongside a strong bass trombone player -- I think the Kaiser's really benefit from that.

Enjoy! :tuba:

Thanks for your insight! I currently have a Bach Megatone 22 and an Olka CB1-A. You think either of those would be a good pairing?

No clue! :)

Guessing the Olka is closer, but also thinking you'll probably need a Euro shank mouthpiece.

Oh man, you gave me a scare lol. I ran down to check if my mouthpieces fit and thankfully they do so the lead pipe size appears to be standard and not euro.

Congrats on the new tuba! That beast looks like a blast to play. So glad you're getting back on the saddle. I was three years off in 2022, and it's been a lot of fun over the past year getting back up to snuff.

Long tones, scales, yadda yadda. It'll come back. Enjoy it!

VERY bad joke:

You should put a Chinese York 6/4 bell on there, a shorter mouthpipe, a horizontal main slide, and shorten it to C - so someone could use it in college.
