My friend (who was a Pershing's Own tuba player, and who passed away this last week) recalled his audition (from his base-band position) to me roughly a year ago:

The most challenging thing they handed him to play was a solid page of sharp-key 16th notes - and THEY counted off the tempo.

After a line or two, it occurred to him that they weren't so interested in how accurately he played it, note-wise (though that certainly added to it - and they had ALREADY heard how VERY WELL he played), but they were MORE interested in him CONTINUING to plug at it, and CONTINUING to maintain the pulse.

Yup -- the ability to stay with it instead of being distracted by the notes you miss, is a big one.

I used to call it on-the-fly composing.

For just a bit, I played trios (sometimes euphonium, sometimes cimbasso...but never tuba) with an incredible trumpet player, and a very strong (symphonic, former military band) horn play - who owned (and - of course - knew) the trios.

(Sight)-reading those things was really challenging, because (with only three parts - particularly romantic era string trio transcriptions) they were relentless.
