I would guess no. That ad has been up for a while, but this is the first time I've seen pics. My guess is that they were cleaning it up for sale. Only one way to find out though.

Who actually made that? I always heard that Lyon and Healy didn’t make any of their own instruments except their harps (the only things out there being made that are Lyon and Healy brand). They would pay other makers to build them stuff with the Lyon and Healy name on them.

No clue.... but some are engraved "own make"... did they make those? I need a history lesson, I was running my mouth and not paying attention.

I had a Lyon & Healy 6/4 3v top action BBb that was built in 1900. As far as I can tell, that predates Holton and York 6/4 BBb. It looked pretty darn American (versus imported) to me. Above the typical engraving is an engraving of their factory.

With a close look you can see the engraving of the factory on that one too. Sort of looks 4/4 to my eye compared to the 6/4 I had (or maybe not). Very good sounding horn. Absolutely unusably flat 3rd partial. I didn’t feel bad taking the bell off and selling the rest.

They claimed to have production facilities that built the “Own Make” horns, and serial numbers certainly suggest that they also produced the “Am’n Make” series. Clearly they stenciled several other models, so apparently they did both.
If it’s tourist season, why can’t we shoot them?

I recall a lot of the L&H horns were built by Holton, but that's a dim memory.

Ferrules seem consistent with Holton at a glance?

Some perhaps younger Own Makes have adifferent ferrule which i always keep my out for, and have usually been pleased when ifind it, even if it isn't on a Lyon and Healy, but rather some one of(f) make not known for brass. such as Melville-Clark soloist, which i don't believe had anything to do with the author.

Looks like a Holton to me.

I’d be interested if it were a little closer.

I'll be in Chicago again in April... if it's still there, I'll try to stop by HornStash and give it a look.

Maybe not on the spray paint theory.

I finally dug my lyon & healy own make tuba out, and it has a gold finish that is not in the best of maintainance, but clearly not spray paint.

This Tuba is on consignment and the seller had the instrument bronzed before bringing it to us.
