>>> THIS <<< is the version of New World I came up with in 1991 and I have always played it since then. I'm not too fond of the Ryker version as he inserts the tuba voice in places where I very much think it shouldn't be, even though it is a lot of fun to play.

My part will let you play so that the tuba voice does not stick out and get you asked not to play the part anymore. Ryker more or less works if you have like eight or more basses and a boomy room. In a dryer room with fewer basses, my version is more conducive to flying beneath the radar and still getting to play out.

I have been using this part for 32 years now. Today I finally incorporated all my little notes and changes from the past.

I am about to head into town to perform this piece for probably the 25th time in my career. I still love it as I did when I first "discovered" it back in 1980 when I was 15 years old.

Also on the program is Nicholas Payton's "Black American Symphony". Mr. Payton plays his trumpet, sings, and plays the piano in its six movements. Very interesting stuff with a challenging tuba part.

I would possibly play a good bit of it (not all), but still would sheepishly feel as though (whether or not this was actually the case) I was annoying the hell out of the bass 'bone player.

I have been known to play a few donuts - along with the bass 'bone player (on the last of three-or-four tuba tacets) - on schlocky pops concerts (out of boredom, or to warm the tuba or cimbasso back up prior to the first piece back "in" - and with exposed parts.

' not trying to be controversial, nor to brush off this very nice part and the generous offer...I've just never been able to get over my buttinsky feelings (regarding playing on the outer movements on this symphony).

...I mentioned a particular player by name (the last time I discussed this), and my intention was not to name-drop, but to make the point, "who the hell am I too..."

In 1992 I was walking into an Orchestra rehearsal that I was not particularly looking forward to - it was Dvorak 9. I had done it before, and knew it was 14 notes. 14 good notes, sure, but ... Zzzzz ... The same concert also had 1812 and some other stuff so it wouldn't be a complete loss.

The rehearsal was prep for the 250th Anniversary of Bladensburg, MD and being led by our Associate Director Amy Mills, who had just left her position as Commander of the USAF Band in DC (she succeeded Col. Gabriel). She hands me this 12 or 15 page handwritten part and says "play this for the Dvorak. It's what the NBC symphony used under Toscanini", grinned, and went on her merry way.

I was 25 and stupid and had no idea of the treasure that had been handed to me. So I started looking at and immediately I was like "oh this is cool!.... hmmm, that's hard.... oh Shirt... WTF????" It wasn't the Ryker edition. I know this because the Ryker edition is tacet for the third movement. This was not. This was a 5th french horn part for the 3rd movement and sat in that general range. It also doubled the 3rd trombone, it doubled the basses, and here and there it acted as a 5th french horn part (not just in the 3rd movement). It was all hand-written and I have never seen it's equal. In retrospect this would've been a great chance to use a contrabass and bass tuba on the same piece, but, I was young so I just played everything on my 188 and slapped a smaller mouthpiece in for the 3rd movement.

I've just been motivated to ping Amy and see she remembers or has the part and if I can get it I will post it. Wade's edition make sense to me, and would be quite unobtrusive for a performance. Thank you for posting this - it's already on my iPad :-)
