Joe Sellmansberger - Romance (mvt II of Vaughan Williams) in October

Post by bloke »

One of the per-service orchestras with which I work is determined to "open", this fall. 8-)

It is The Jackson Symphony Orchestra, in Jackson, Tennessee.
"The" is significant, because that's included in the orchestra's website name.

It's in a medium-sized city on Interstate 40, roughly halfway between Memphis and Nashville.

With reduced strings, double concerts, and other strategies, "the show will go on".

There will be a September concert (for which I've already received my sheet music, via mail).

 The October concert will exclusively feature the brass section of the orchestra - as a brass choir., along with two percussion.

There is an arrangement of the Ralph Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto for tuba and brass choir, and (along with roughly 50 minutes of other music) we'll be playing the "Romance" (aka "Romanza") movement of the concerto with the following instruments accompanying: piccolo trumpet, two soprano trumpets, four horns, and three trombones.

There will be TWO concerts on the SAME EVENING (one hour apart) which allows all of the regular patrons to sit farther apart, yet still all come to the concert.

Saturday, October 17, 2020
"Double [repeat] Feature" at 6:00pm and 8:00pm
1627 N Highland Ave.
Jackson, TN 38301

Whether it's our front-line healthcare workers, parents frantically doing schoolwork online with kids, or those in our community who volunteer in countless ways, this uplifting concert will raise the roof for all who deserve resounding applause!
Here's a map showing (roughly) a two hour drive away from Jackson, Tennessee:

I'm sure most live too far away, and some others (particularly in the gig economy) need to hold on to their $35's...but It would be great to see some forum'ers there. :D

Do you know if they broadcast/re-broadcast the performances anywhere?

You might want to put a link to this under Upcoming Recitals and Concerts.

Wouldn't it be better in both places? Not trying to be pestilent, but probably succeeding any way.

I spoke to the operations manager yesterday, between our rehearsal in our two shows.
They confirmed that the “Romance” movement of the RVW (with nine piece brass accompaniment) is confirmed for programming, on the October concert.

UPDATE...

OK...I've finally started prac'cin' this thing, 'cause Mrs. bloke was concerned, and has been badgering me.

I played it through (with a pianist I found on youtube) for memory once, and without goofin' up.

Mrs. bloke was in the next room (watching one of the last few daily episodes - getting near the end - of "The Good Wife"), and I hollered to her, "That was for memory!" to which she responded, "REALLY...?? That was GOOD...so do it again." ...so I did it again...and she made me also do it again...again...and then I went to bed...

...because the huge mower is FINALLY repaired (running quite well, thank goodness!), there were/are at least a dozen 6'x12' heaping trailer-loads of blown-into-long-rows grass clippings to rake up (acres of VERY tall grass) and dump in ravines, and I needed to get up early today to get on that task, as 3" - 5" of tropical storm residual rain is predicted by the huge TV guy with the green-screen behind him, the clicker hidden in his hand, and the bizarre grey-rooster-lookin' toupée.

update # MCMCCCXXXXVIII

Playing it standing up is laborious.
I doubt that I'll be following that tack...
...though somewhere I believe I might have one of those harness thingies.

Even handmade F tubas - if loaded down with six valves - aren't particularly lightweight.

just realized that I have a tune list for this
(if anyone is both close enough and interested enough to attend...??)

Fanfare for the Common Man
Amazing Grace
George Cohan Canadian Brass
America the Beautiful
Liberty Bell March
Washington Post March
Deep River
Leiper's Fork March (It's a place in Tennessee...I can't find a performance of this on youtube for you to hear...)
Tuba Concerto - "Romance"
Dectet
Original Rags
Irish Tune from County Derry
Military Salute
Stars and Stripes (encore - tuba plays the piccolo obbligato in the trio)

TRAILER-LOADS OF GRASS UPDATE:
I believe we are down to one or two trailer-loads remaining to shovel on to the trailer and dump into the ravines, but - after that - I need to mow around the ponds (again)...but I don't anticipate not being able to find places to blow that discharge/thatch.
There is a newly-cleared lower pasture (that I had been mowing) but we sold quite a few trees off the property to loggers, and (until I get that huge pasture cleaned of several hardwood treetops, hopefully - this winter) it's currently a mess, down there, so...
GOOD NEWS:
My neighbor (with a new-to-him and new-lookin' tractor with a bunch of attachments) is going to smooth the big pond's spillway back out (as there's a huge RUT - back there, from the loggers pulling gigantic hardwood tree trunks past there), and it's currently too rough to mow, as the raised earth (on either side of that rut) is several inches high.

If this was a "normal" October, we would be within driving distance of your concert, and I would certainly be there! Break a leg!
