I sold my upright (a 1940's 5-string Kay) several years ago, but I've blatantly broken the bloke rule year-after-year-after year, regarding my electric bass (right make/right model/right vintage). I was just thinking about letting it go, and I got a message...

maybe...' ain't got no, and (a huge percentage of being called for gigs - ie. this is a "theory") is that the person hiring thinks of your name.

I even apply the "bloke rule" to clothing. I now have a semi-retirement job where I don't wear a suit every day as I did for decades. Last month I sent a half-dozen suits I will never wear again to a church that helps young men get on their feet, including job interview counseling and proper attire.

That's the way to do it; I have several student level instruments (or somewhat better) that are going to a specific branch of Salvation Army here that has a music program for kids. I don't need whatever money I could get, and they will get a start in music.
