A fun video

Post by matt g »

Always loved this tune. I would imagine that what’s on video here is not what’s being heard (look for microphones…), but it’s a fun video nonetheless.

A couple of screenshots for reference…

Based on what I see in the string players, I think the audio is legit.

This audio sounds effectively identical as does the album.

Do I think people were playing in the studio in the first video? Absolutely. Do I think it’s what was broadcast? Not sure.

Edit: didn’t paste the link right the first attempt at this post.

"Classical Gas" is one of the first arrangements I ever tried for brass quintet. I think this was taped as a part of the old "Smothers Brothers" show.

The flip side of the 45 is another fun tune called "Baroque-A-Nova". Lots of choral stuff that I do not personally care for, and it is late-sixties cheese, but I like the tune itself, anyway.

In my house;
We embrace classic 60s cheese.
Cheese is good.
Overdubs are magic.
Predictable key changes are soothing.

Sounds a little bit like the M*A*S*H theme song.

Interesting. I’ve played for TV broadcasts several times . . . It’s always been play and record in studio prior to broadcast, and then lipsynching for the actual broadcast. I’m sure it has everything to do with ensuring audio quality for the broadcast, but I’m sure that isn’t always the case.

As easily guessed, that tune was part of my teenage cocktail party nylon string repertoire, I never played it unless it was requested, but it was always requested.

The orchestral interludes weren't too hard to play on the guitar, thankfully, via the miracle of barre chords.

I like the recording bass.

The most important question is: What kind of tuba is it?

Looks like a Reynolds to me.

What decade was that?

by the 80's it was clear that live stuff was practically dead.

My evidence?

Confirmed . . . Early to mid 90s. I did not perform with Mili Vanilli.
