Morphing into One of Those Guys Who Sells Stuff…

Post by the elephant »

I am about to start selling my arrangements. I am about to start building tubas and selling them. I am about to re-start my former lucrative selling of refurbished student instruments. This time I am doubling down on woodwinds now that I am good at them.

I have about ten tubas in addition to about 15 oboes, bassoons, bass clarinets, and the holy trinity of flute-clarinet-alto sax. I have about 40 additional brass and woodwind instruments here to work through.

So my cup is overly full and I will be working through all this up through Christmas, and then will start selling locally through some band director friends who use me for repair work.

I am sick of depending on the friggin' Mississippi State Legislature and hate dealing with customers, so this will be a fait accompli sort of business: I present finished instruments with a price. No haggling. Take it or leave it. If no one buys a horn after a while I will lower the price until I learn what my local market will sustain.

Sorry about no more free tunes, though. I really am. But I have to pay for my house every month for many years to come.

I have received some great feedback to help me make them better over the years, and I thank you folks for that. I have the finalized versions ready to go and will now be spending much more time working on them, trying to narrow ranges, and simplify things, and provide more breaks for each player. Once all the changes have been "approved" by my two quintets I will set up an online order page to sell hard copies. My horn and tuba duet book is nearly done, and I have been convinced to do a euphonium and tuba version, which might be available come Spring Break 2021.

Wish me luck. I have not been very confident (or competent) as a business owner, which is why I do not do that right now.

But I have to try.

My attempt at running a micro-publishing house is called Pachyderm Press
My little shop is called Yellow Dog Music, LLC.

If I start to sell things here I will become a sponsor, or partner, or whatever it is we have right now.

Congratulations!
Our financial lives tend to be infinitely more stable when more of our income is derived from helping people pursue their interests, rather than hoping they will subsidize ours.
Far larger - and supposedly: more stable - ensembles than ours are completely shut down now, and those who relied on that for a very large percentage of their income live in much more expensive places to live than do you and I...
...and who knows what’s going to happen to my son-in-law (the father of my grandchildren), who is one of those types of people... :eyes:

Best of luck to you. We need more small business music stores/repair shops/publishers. Can't wait to see what you are offering for sale.

I like the name of your shop - it reminds me of the Yazoo & Delta R.R.

More than one income source is a good thing. You're an honest guy who will be good to his word. That certainly will help your business. Maybe you will do well enough to upgrade your facilities for greater efficiency. It's all good!

Wade, don't morph too much. If you go too far, who will take care of these responsibilities?

Not that this would be a good logo for your business…(I don’t believe it would at all), but in my mind I can’t help but continue to envision some logo where there’s a yellow steam locomotive -with a dog face on the front of it - appearing to go fast down the tracks with a coal car full of wind instruments.

I feel like I already owe you money for your Christmas quartet book, so as soon as you post, I’m buying something.
