I'm thinking that maybe (??) some of us should bring two identical mouthpieces to a gig - particularly if there's going to be some yankee conductor...(??)

What he does is to flip the switch, and then change his hand position from sul tasto to sul ponticello (or vice-versa).
We could do the same thing with an identical mouthpiece (and then, just play with a "harder" or "prettier" sound).

Oh, it was the same damn mute, I just pulled it out and shuffled around behind me, stuck it back in and played differently. I don’t know if Fritz Reiner would qualify as a yankee, but…
Ren Schilke was once playing bass trumpet at a Chicago Symphony rehearsal. He was using a large trumpet mouthpiece. Reiner stopped the orchestra, pointed at Schilke, and said that it was impossible to produce the correct bass trumpet tone with a trumpet mouthpiece. Schilke was instructed to show up at the next rehearsal with a “proper” trombone mouthpiece. Mr. Schilke went to his shop that evening and made the same mouthpiece he had been using, only inside a trombone blank. During the next rehearsal Reiner again stopped the orchestra, pointed to Schilke, and said,”See, now that is the true bass trumpet sound.”
