When I was in college, some friends of mine who also played in concert and/or jazz band did actually give a recital piece on the music hall stage: a cover of Ride Like the Wind by Christopher Cross. The lead singer was more of a baritone, still had the range, and that gave the added depth to the vocals I always thought was lacking in the original. He not only sang and played the recital piano, but was also principal trombone in jazz band and 2nd chair in concert band, as well as tour choir. The bass player played a P-bass and went on to a significant recording and performance career. The guitarist had an ES175T (thin body, like a 330 or Casino) and was accepted to Berklee; he sang the backups in a covered tone very similar to Michael McDonald. The drummer was in it for fun, but was solid nonetheless. They absolutely rocked the joint. This was 1981. Because of their classical training, I thought they all sang the ba-da-da-da bridge/harmony vocals together better than the record. So did the faculty.

Snarky Puppy started as a North Texas State U. "friends" band. Lots of similar examples.
