So "dp" posted in the other thread about an ensemble losing the ability to play "piano" dynamics and I thought that topic needed it's own discussion.
I have found it to be astounding (or disturbing) to play in various groups made up of professional, formally trained musicians.....(mostly band teachers) who dont utilize dynamics other than loud and louder.....
Why...why.... I dont get it...
All of the dynamics make it fun and interesting...
If everyone is playing loud all the time... your not listening to each other.. your not hearing all the cool stuff that other instruments are playing.
Ok... your turn...

Re: Dynamics/ musicianship....
yeah...Brass quintets (even remarkably talented/accomplished players) are the most guilty.
I'm not naming names/places, but - WEEKLY - I would continuously be begging (particularly as we were rehearsing in a private teaching studio with no acoustic baffles or anything...)
Guys...PLEASE...Holy JESUS... !!!
...and the more difficult, fast, and show-offy, the more f'ing loud it was.
It also costs dough...
When symphony orchestras send groups to schools for the hearing impaired (a bunch of little kids with hearing aids or cochlear implants, etc...) or a cancer ward in a hospital or a hospice, etc., etc...
..."Don't send the brass group. They're too damn loud for those venues."
bloke "yup."
