SOLD: tiny .560" bore Czech 3 piston Eb with small shank trb. (!) receiver $200

Post by arpthark »

edit: this has sold!

This is a very, very small bore Eb tuba made in Czechoslovakia. No manufacturer name but they were commonly sold in the US under names like Wurlizter. It has gold lacquer that is about 90% remaining. Lead pipe has been patched, various things repaired, all valves move, some slides limed shut.

It has a small shank trombone receiver, but it does include a mouthpiece that fits the instrument. Find a custom 'piece and use it as a poor man's cimbasso. It can get fairly bright.

I'd like to get $200 for it.

Pics to be posted later tonight. PM or email beanhillbrass at gmail if you are interested. Thanks!

Blake

edit: Here is a pic before it was repaired:

I have a long-neglected project horn which is one of those century-old four valve top action tiny Conn E-flat tubas (only .625" bore) which was pretty easy to shorten to F, it's not finished - and I don't know when/if it will be, but the idea of it is sort of an F euphonium. My idea of the project originally was to build sort of a thing to use when parts ask for serpent or oohicleide.

This instrument definitely plays more like a large Eb baritone than a small Eb tuba.

This would be interesting to shorten to F and add a couple rotors. It has the long MTS before the valves which gives you plenty to cut.

Seems like a pretty good offer to me; someone could get an awful lot of fun and utility out of that instrument - as, indeed, many folk in the past will have done so with such instruments.

Wick do small shank Tuba mouthpieces. Whilst (IMHO) slightly bigger gives a better tone a three valve Eb can play quite well with a Bass Trombone mouthpiece too (done it).

Wishing you well with the sale.

Thanks for the kind words. Just to clarify, this takes a mouthpiece even smaller than small old British shank (modern bass trombone size)—it takes modern small-shank tenor trombone size.

Valves 7, 8, and 9? So, it's a nine valved Eb that's missing the first 6 valves?! :smilie8:

It looks like an Amati Tuba to me (AEB 211) and similar is still available from them (https://www.amati.cz/en/products/brassw ... ents/tubas). I’m surprised about the shank size but it has a mouthpiece that plays and maybe either something with a bigger shank could be turned down to suit or a bigger receiver fitted … and perhaps what’s now fitted isn’t the original receiver. Whatever, as it stands it works and is well priced for what it offers.
