Is this a Kaiser horn?

Post by BopEuph »

This looks like a fun horn!

I don't know about y'all, but eBay regularly does this stupid "access denied" page to apparently curb bots, but it gives a TON of false positives. So I'll put a screenshot here so you can click the link if you don't want to risk being marked as a bot while browsing something you're not interested in.

Yep, that garland, or whatever you'd call it, has to go.

"Keel"!

I don't think this is a "Kaisertuba" proper. Looks about the size of a Miraphone 186 or Cerveny 686, maybe a hair bigger. Probably made by Cerveny.

Clicking through the pics, it has some pretty gnarly bell damage.

Size of the horn is approx. 41inch/104cm. The length of the tubing is approx. 600 (!) cm (244Inch! )The bell meassures 17inch/43 cm
"Kaiser" is an unspecific designation. Size-wise it's smaller than some/most "kaiser" basses and is closer to a typical contrabass of that period. My Cerveny has a similarly sized bell but is approximately 6 inches taller (118cm is the catalog height). See here.

Oh, I missed the bell damage! Not interested in the horn myself, but I'd probably have bought it 10 years ago. So I didn't click through all the pics.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "gnarly" bell damage. It's got a few creases and pings, but nothing that looks too bad. When I hear something like "gnarly" I think of something like this:

You're right, I must be going crazy. I saw another tuba on eBay that looked just like that and had significant bell damage and terrible solder. I think it was even the same importer stamped on the bell.

Holy jeez. When I was in the market for a BBb, I would have scooped this guy up so fast.

The smaller the BORE of the valveset appears in a picture of a suspected-to-be-large tuba, the more likely the tuba is to be quite large.

Would it also work other way around? If a not so large on appearance tuba would have large bore, say 21 mm or larger would that classify it as Kaiser?

I'd guess you won't really perceive that 21mm bore size in the photo, so much. What the photo shows you is the entire valve assembly, which is the part that's a somewhat reliable scale clue, because it's sized to hands.

This Miraphone 190 BBb had a valve bore in that range, and to my eye the valves look small relative to the tuba. Not a great illustration because size looks different on shiny things, but it's what was laying around, and it's a fairly big tuba.

Actually, I'm not crazy. If you click through the description of the eBay ad in the original post, you will see pics of a completely different horn with a lot of issues.

Holy jeez. That's a huge difference, and I'd be super pissed if I got the horn expecting the first pic.

Sure, but to be fair, it seemed to me that all the other pictures were the beater, so that be a pretty careless purchaser.

Good point. I am mildly interested in a couple of the seller's 4v baritones (but I don't know if I want to blow money on those ancient stencil horns), and I'd definitely be much more discerning now before purchasing one, if I did.
