Mic in bell and intonation

Post by BopEuph »

Thought my Kelly Shu bass drum mount that I had set up for the Holton sousaphone would still be good enough to fit the Kanstul. Not even close. Figured the bungees would still have some tension, but nope. So I did the mic-in-sock-and-down-the-bell thing.

Horn ended up SUPER flat. Is it due to the position of the mic so far down the bell (it ended up in the bottom bow), or is it because it basically created an obstruction?

I don't intend to get a mic mount for the Kanstul. It's meant for concert music. I have one for the Conn 12J, but the Conn is in the shop getting an overhaul, and the mount is buried somewhere in storage and I don't know where to begin to look for it. I'll probably do the Epcot sound engineer trick of taping the mic just inside the bell. I wrapped the cable on the upper tubing to get it higher up in the horn, but every time I was resting the mic fell out. So taping is the way to go.

By the way, I've been treating the tuba like a bass for these Oktoberfest gigs by micing the horn with an SM58 hooked up to a Shure wireless system, fed into my Polytone bass amp. It's so nice not having to work so hard just to hear myself in a 10-piece polka band, and will provide my own bass rig for commercial music from now on.

If you see a Willson 2900, serial W2177, it's been missing for a long time. Help me bring it home.
