So if I want to have an ophicleide sound, I need to use an ophicleide?
It seems to be the easiest way, at least since new ones are available for reasonable prices.
When I first heard one in 1995 I wanted one, but with the choice of two makers with 5-digit prices or 100+ years old in more or less questionable condition I had to wait until Wessex offered one in 2015. But I think an old one would not have survived the training for a big solo concert with orchestra in 2017 for the 200th anniversary of the instrument.
If you have a chance to try one: do it!

I do want to try the Wessex C - I like C slightly better than Bb, in all honesty. Nothing to do with sound, I just find it easier for me.

I knew a girl in high school a couple years younger than me who made all-state band exactly like that with an Eb contra-alto clarinet - the only one who tried out!

That's how I got to play tuba in district band. I didn't think I was good enough to try out, and then they needed another tuba. My band director nominated me, and I was in without audition.
