"Piggy-ish" beefy Schiller ~7/8-size BBb tuba | Tucson CL

He likes the horn, but it ended up being a little too heavy for him to schlep around. He's in the market for a lighter, smaller 3/4-size horn (old man tuba).

18 lbs.

Most F tubas (particularly if 4 valves) weigh nearly that much.
My handmade (not thick brass) F tuba weighs a bit over 17.

The instrument appears to be in really nice condition, and might even be fabricated at one of the better Chinese factories...

( ' not questioning the viability of the tuba, but the logic in selling it - in hopes for finding anything - certainly with 4 valves - that weighs much less.)

...I just don't get the "I'm getting old, and need to sell my tuba that weighs from 18 - 22 lbs - so I can buy some other 4-valve tuba that weighs significantly less" thing...because even old 40-year-old Cerveny 681 tubas (if not all beat-up - because they're so thin) don't weight that much less.

If 18 pounds, I'm thinking...
- ditch the 20 lb. (even heavier?) case (and stick it in the basement/attic)
- keep a blanket folded up in the car
- double-over a 5-to-6-feet-long foam rubber mattress pad
- stuff that thick and 6'-long piece of foam rubber (extending upward, past "tuba level") down in the backseat legs/feet area
- wrap the tuba in a blanket, toss it in the back seat
- arrive at the venue, unwrap the tuba
- carry the tuba into the venue resting on one's shoulder (a scant 18 lbs.)

And it is going to be play-tested on Monday. Owner used to play in the brass band and remembers me.

Um -- this appears to be it on the Schiller site: https://www.jimlaabsmusicstore.com/stor ... y-tuba-44/ (Only one I can find on the site that has this tuning slide location/orientation.)

New price $2380. Asking price of the one in the ad is $2800. Schiller says is 4/4, seller says is 3/4. Am I missing something?

I'm not willing to order from Schiller because I don't agree with the way they do business; if you get a dog, you have a dog. But paying more than new price for a used one seems a bit odd.

If it's convenient, test play it. If you like it, offer the price that it would cost to order it, it remember that if you did order it, you would not have the ability to test it first, plus you would be paying tax and shipping.

As usual with Schiller ad copy, there isn't much "piggy" this tuba

Wrong key, Wrong bore size, wrong wrap, looks too tall, and the bell throat is too small

Could be its not the "exact" same one --- this one has a krantz and the one on the Schiller web site does not.
I will have to inquire of the seller "where is this one on the Schiller web site" and see what he comes up with. And it will depend on how playable / carryable this one is for me, no matter the price. The other two I am considering are the Mfone 282 and 494, neither of which is likely to show up at this price point, and both of which actually are 3/4 tubas. Tuner and mouthpiece go with me to the playtest.

I just turned down a chance to buy a drop-dead-gorgeous rosewood Laubin oboe, because it was $12k, and I've realized I don't want to play oboe in bands or orchestras, and I DO play tuba just about everywhere, and more opportunities keep showing up on a regular basis. So makes much more sense to add a contrabass to the stable, hopefully one that does not send me into the same fingering hell as the last CC did.

That was interesting -- found out my sound concept appears to be Mirafone. So have decided to look for a good used four valve 184 BBb, in the hope that I do not end up in "fingering hell" like I did with the last CC.
