Being that (six inches of snow) it's perfect "try-doing-something-new" weather), we tackled this job, and ended up with this result.

With special thanks to @MikeMason, the brass cap (formed over the tip end of a tenor saxophone neck expander - with the assistance of a Tractor Supply 1-1/2" hose clamp), ended up being donated from a model 600 "F tuba shaped object" which he sold to us several years ago, and from which I've picked off all sorts of misc. parts. (This particular part was cut out of the main slide dogleg - about a half inch from the large end.

most importantly:
It fits snugly into the boot joint (without any metal-to-metal scuffing) !
