Yamaha YCB 822 test drive

Post by Tubajug »

Hey there,

I've got a Yamaha YCB 822 to test drive here and wondering what mouthpiece you might recommend? Here's what I have available:

Yamaha 67C4
Conn Helleberg
Helleberg 7B
Schilke 66
Sellmansberger Symphony (two piece model)
Perantucci PT 44
Wick 3L
Blessing 18

Go!

King 2341 with Holton Monster Eb Bell
King/Conn Eb Frankentuba
Pan AmeriConn BBb Helicon
Yamaha YBB-103

There's no telling with Yamaha, because they come up with numbers that strongly hint at other previously made mouthpieces, and then - upon trying their mouthpieces - they have little-of-nothing to do with the previously made mouthpiece with a similar number.

Having said that, I'd probably try the Yamaha thing that has a "C4" at the end of its model number as the first one tried - just because, and even though their model numbers always remind me of Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown.

the Sellmansberger Symphony is my goto on every contrabass tuba. I tried a bach 12 for bit a couple months ago, but I went back to the Symphony

A friend of mine played an 822 in college. He used a Wick, I believe. Can't remember which one,but I'd guess it was the largest (1?).

My recollection of the 822, however, is that it was very easy to play... and wasn't particularly mouthpiece sensitive, if even at all.

Which is good.

But also is kinda the problem. The Blah-maha sound is going to be what it's going to be, and you can't change it.

Which frankly, is a tuba player's problem.. Nobody else (except maybe a needy or grumpy bass trombone player) is going to say anything.

I apologize for not noticing that it is a ycb. I read it as yfb. Please ignore my suggestion, and play whatever you choose.

I used a SHII when Laskey was still there. Maybe the 30H would work well?

Try them all, put away the ones that are immediate rejects, and switch around for a couple of weeks. They should shake out reasonably quickly.

Mouthpieces are totally a personal thing. Listen to recommendations, but make your own decision. Sometimes you'll surprise yourself. :tuba:

The very competent guy who sits next to me in brass band (on the BBb part) plays one of those. He has a bit of an unusual mouthpiece, one I hadn't heard of or I'd remember what it was. He is VERY good -- which means that mouthpiece clearly works for him. I can ask what it is on Tuesday if you want me to.

My mate in the tuba section plays a Wick AT3Y on his. I've heard him all over the range, and it sounds good.

Thanks everyone! I'll probably try them all, just for fun. If anyone is interested, this tuba will be for sale. It belongs to the father of a friend of mine who can no longer play, but I'll get an ad together here in the next few weeks.

It's been a busy few days, so I've only used the one it came with, the DW 3L (no good), and my Sellmansberger Symphony so far. The Sellmansberger is the easiest of those three. Big, rich sound with enough clarity. The DW felt too constricting.
