Every time I played that piece, the band accompanying me was really loud. Because probably the softest that I could get away playing with was forte, I feel like I just made it through each of those performances that I've done... Admittedly, I've never done just one movement. Perhaps that's a smarter way to go when playing with a wind band.

I don't know why, but I tend to believe that brass bands are more sensitive regarding dynamics, and it would be easier to play that piece being accompanied by a brass band.
Maybe twenty years ago, a band wanted me to go with them during the summer (when I had all my repair work to do) and play that piece while they toured England. I thought to myself, (besides being an implausible tour for me) "Why the hell would a bunch of English people want to hear an American wind band play that piece with the soloist playing an F tuba?"
