Jazz tuba solos
I'm taking an improv class and have to do a transcription as the final project. Since the professor is letting me do tuba I was wondering if anybody has any recommendations of jazz tuba solos. I have checked out modern jazz tuba project but those guys are animals and outside my skill level.

Re: Jazz tuba solos
I don't have any specific solos, but you can look into Don Butterfield, Bill Barber, and Howard Johnson.

Re: Jazz tuba solos
Any solo can be played on tuba. I have a trad jazz band and the tuba plays solos right along with all the other instruments. For a time I was the tuba player in the band. The trombone player always commented that I play tuba like I play cornet, which is my primary instrument. When my tuba player first took a solo, she sounded just like I do. I loved it. She is a college professor and teaches tuba. Tuba is incredibly versatile if you let it be. As the line went in The Matrix movie, let your mind be free.

How about Sam Pilafian's Sweet Georgia Brown on his Travelin' Light album?

Re: Jazz tuba solos
Seek out Dr. David Freedy. He is a jazz tubist (first tubist to my knowledge to get a DMA in tuba with a jazz emphasis), recordings of him doing Parker’s Mood and other works out there. I can get you his contact info if you need more information.
