I liked the Gnagey a lot when I tried it at NABBA last spring. One thing that stood out about all the Wessex tubas was that they were a lot heavier than I’m used to. Very sturdy feeling.

I just want to thank everyone again for your advice on this thread that I started. And now I want to go full circle because I took the plunge and bought a Miraphone 187-4U today. My "local" Miraphone dealer, a cool 650 miles from home, Taylor Music in Aberdeen, SD kindly prepared the 186, 187, and 191 for me to try out. I drove thorugh a bit of snow and came in today thinking I would walk out with the 186 or nothing; that somehow the other two would be too overwhelming in sound. So I started playing them in the order above. I thought that each has its own tone, with increasing richness going up the models. I cycled through them three times in a row. Same result every time. The 187 consistently stood out, not only as to how I felt my about how I sounded, but also thinking about how I plan to use it, in community type ensenbles, but with flexibility for other contexts.

So there you have it. Thanks again to this great community for the advice!

The front action 3+1 is the Elgar. It always looked intriguing to me.. anyone ever play one?

I played one at the Army conference last year, I thought it was really really good but if they have converted it to a four in a row valve set, I think I'll like it even more
