Going to retrieve stolen goods on your own from a criminal is a rather poor idea.
Now that all depends...

Again:
I’d round up a posse of shootists…
…or should I rely on the gov’t to retrieve it for me?

GPX in Minneapolis smells like pee and there's never anyone around -- employees, passengers, or homeless people.
Last time I went there, I couldn't find anyone to help me, and there is no direct phone number. So I went into the bus area and found the door to the storage room and just went in.
Then the guy working there saw me walk in, remembered me from a little while before, and also gave me the direct phone number to his desk (which I promptly lost).
Never had a bad experience, but never had a good one either. I don't mind breaking even.

Warning: Don’t any of you maniacs try going to chase down this bus!
Is the driver's name Manny? He's saying for $100 and lunch I can take the tuba case and no one will know
This is a good idea though, the only drawback is when your horn gets stuck in Timbucktwo (farther than you can really drive to get it or do anything about it) you still have to find a live person at that location and GOOD LUCK now. If you thought GH was bad before..you haven't seen anything.
Oh, I’ve seen the results of recent Greyhound. I just had a tuba come from Boston to SoCal. It took 6 weeks!
It’s in Texas now:

Going with the dude on the left, or actual @Doc, would be a major confidence booster for sure.

My recent tuba greyhound data point is a month transit from greater Seattle area to Boston. But add that to a month after the seller dropped it off and someone finally noticed "there's this box here, and we have misplaced the paperwork, maybe if we call the phone number on the label, we can figure out what's up with it"
The bit where parking offers first 15 min free for picking up packages, and i show during hours to see. a closed sign, back at (time, an hour later) a couple of times...
Seller was immeasurably frustrated.
But i did get my <$500 tuba safe and sound, and had said all through the process i was not in a hurry. So i am satisfied.

Chances are the "thief" is passed out and you can just collect it back from them.

I like this AirTag thing. If it sat for several days in one spot, I’d go into the station that I dropped it off with and ask them to make a phone call. They are helpful there. Overworked, but helpful.
@the elephant I think you missed your chance…

Not that it would be the most fun thing... but would a tuba be guaranteed to travel with you on the bus, if you were a ticketed passenger?

https://www.greyhound.com/en/help-and-i ... fo/baggage
Bring overweight and excess baggage through Greyhound Package Express:
You'll need to ship any excess baggage at the Greyhound Package Express counter
You can ship 5 pieces of excess baggage at a discounted rate of $36-$46 each, depending on how far you're going. The discounted rate for overweight or oversize baggage is $42-$52 each, depending on how far you are going. This is in addition to those you're allowed to bring on board. Any more than 5 items will be charged at our usual rates
The maximum weight for baggage shipped using Greyhound Package Express is 75lb (34kg) per item.
You'll need to show proof of purchase for your ticket to get the discounted rate.
Baggage can only be shipped to the destination shown on your ticket.
To get the discounted rate, your baggage will need to be shipped at the same time you're traveling. You can send it on ahead of you if you prefer, but you'll need to pay the usual rate.
Your excess baggage won't necessarily be shipped on the same bus you're traveling on, so it may arrive at a later date and time - but don't worry we'll let you know exactly when to expect it.
There's a free value allowance of up to $250 (for insurance purposes). If you want to increase the value, you'll need to pay a declared value charge. The maximum value is $1,000 for the entire shipment.

Alabama now.
This must be what it’s like for military commanders watching a battle in real time.
You can watch what everyone is doing, but can’t really change anything.

I passed by the Greyhound depot in Jackson twice today as I came into and then left town. Sorry I missed my big chance to steal your tuba. But thanks for the invitation to commit grand larceny.

@the elephant Perhaps I should have phrased it more like: “Please wave to every passing Greyhound bus and if possible, insure that they are driving safely.”
I wasn’t really trying to push you towards a life of crime.

That was they same day I vowed to myself I’d never be poor.

I have had occasion to take the bus, and found it pleasant. But then i have a talent for sitting in one place for long periods of time, and take advantage being able to consume visual media as well as audio media, which one can't do while driving.
Granted, buses take longer because i have to follow their schedule rather than they mine, but still manageable.
Anyway, in Greyhound vs. Apple tag, i am rooting for Apple Tag, but that would actually be a win for Greyhound as well. Symbiotic relationship. My buzzword bingo isn't what it once was... synergistic?
