This brings up the question that my wife and I wrestle with every day in raising our daughter: What is the end goal of all of the decisions we have made, are making, and will make? What we've come to is: Create an environment and raise her in a way that she can become a happy adult. If her goal is to be a professional orchestral musician (god help us...), and she gets into Julliard with no scholarship or gets a full ride to the music school at the University of Washington? No one looks at your resume when you're behind a screen playing excerpts. The happiness is leaving that audition no having a loan payment the next day. Hours of practice are hours of practice no matter where they happen.

It's a variation of the conversation we have with young people who ask whether they should go to law school: (1) Do you want to be a lawyer; (2) Can you go for free or in-state tuition? If either answer is no, then going to law school isn't a path to happiness.

I know for a fact that there are auditions where you resume matters, but not how you might think.

There was a Marine Band audition - in the last 30 years - where there were several superior candidates. The differences between them were so small that they could be disregarded. The CO asked the committee for their input, and several gave their recommendations but nothing jumped out. One of the tuba players on the committee looked at the resumes for a minute when it was his turn, slid one across the table and said "that's your guy". The CO asked why and he said "look at this job history. He's driven heavy machinery for a living" plus a few other observations that indicated the candidate understood the importance of hard work, day in and day out. They hired that candidate.
