People born in years that end in zero are always some number of years old that ends in the same number in which the current year ends.
Personally, I find this to be absolutely astonishing, but we – as mere mortals – simply must except those things which we don’t yet understand, and trust that someday The Science will find ways to explain it. (Personally, I believe this particular phenomenon is due to mankind spewing excessive carbon into the atmosphere.)

Of course, in recent times, the 186 has a larger bell now.

The Germans understand the lack of precision with the typical American consumer.
In Germany, the most popular model has always been referred to as “Modell 186.5”
Later, they actually change the model designation – in Germany only – to “187.7165”
They didn’t bother to change the C tuba model number, because C tubas are not allowed in Germany.
(if you don’t believe any of this, just ask the Facebook fact checkers.)

Except, oops, my 183 has a 15 inch bell, and I don't know what the 283 has but it's pretty wide.

Only on and after your birthday, though.
My birthday is late in 1980... so for most of this "2" year, I'm still a "1" age.

That sort of thing is - again - affected by moon cycles, climate change, magnetic pole shifts, and such.
I really didn't want to get that technical in my explanation.
