Well it is finally on its way -- but not as I requested. I realize no carrier is "safe" and I'll just have to see how it turns out. I did insure it with Clarion a couple weeks ago, but would be sad if I had to collect. It was finally packed padded in the soft case in a box, and the mute in the hard case without a box. We shall see what arrives in what shape in a few days. I do expect the hard case to be somewhat battered on the outside, and will just accept that, hoping nothing else is battered. I would have driven to Idaho if I had thought there was any way I could do it.

It arrived this morning with no damage. As advertised, and I was very thankful that the college student selling it was willing to do a lot of back-and-forth on packing until we found something that worked. I can't remember who here who said to use the Uhaul grand moving boxes, but that ended up working (for both -- tuba in gig bag and hard case with mute inside.) I had a nice long conversation with the UPS driver who delivered them about what a tuba is -- and he was going to go google it.
So --- yeeeks this is a LOT heavier than my current Eb. No wonder I gave up tuba, if the NStar with its five valves was as heavy as this one is. I did not realize there would be such a weight difference but should have. So -- we will see. I gave it just a short blow to make sure everything works, which it does. And it sounds like a contra; there is a subtle difference between a contra low C and an Eb low C.
BTW for picking up peanuts from having unpacked something this size, I find a dust pan to work best inside. Outside -- haha, a snow shovel. Back in the box and now what to do with the box ---
Edit: UPS does not ALWAYS destroy things. I saw one small indent on one of the boxes, and that was it. I'm not sure what to do with a cubic yard of peanuts though.

And I was reminded that Eb air is not the same as CC air, and I got barked at. About fell over laughing too.
