Like Joe, I made a point to have different horns that to me sounded more appropriate for given playing situations. At one time I had small medium and large CC horns in both piston and rotary config. To me they sound different, but I'm not so sure (apart from the "size" of the sound) that there is that much difference in the hall. Besides, good ensemble playing fits the ensemble, right? Doesn't "stick out"...hmmm? Feedback from others is consistent with this thought and has always been most consistently "that's Dale" regardless of what I was playing. Only real exceptions were when they'd turn and say, "Dale brought the Holton."

I miss the chair

I like the big (6/4) B-flat, but it's not always the best thing.
The little powerhouse (extremely compact Holton 4/4 B-flat) is handy if I'm afraid a bass guitar player is going to swing around thoughtlessly, or if I want a wide-yet-punchy (b.s. words, yes?) sound for most of the charts.

I used the F tuba (recently) for everything SIMPLY BECAUSE I didn't want to carry a euphonium and "the big tuba" up a whole bunch of stairs (cathedral). The organist - I could tell - wanted more *"biggiduh-bass-du-buh" for one or two things (yet those both only lasted less than a minute, and he was honking out the same pitches - at full volume - with his pedals)...I'll be back there for Christmas/Easter every year until I can no longer climb those stairs, and that place pays very generously...so my status is secure.

(i have long since learned, but usually forget in the moment, that i can't hear all my playing due to being under or behind the bell...)

If you can have hope, change, and then joy, you can also have a sound.

It's just another buzzword.

This is actually meant as a joke, but I doubt that many will get it.)
