My monster Eb build.

I suppose I have less self-esteem. I could list everything that I built that I was pleased with yet sold, but maybe you can think of some of them yourself.

I was pretty fond and proud of of the 4 + 1 York front action E flat, the Buescher C helicon, the (not as tricky a build, but more adaptations required than some might suspect) four valve 36k fiberglass, and a couple of other things that I put together most of the way that were really promising but realized that I just didn't need them. Maybe something else that I actually took to the finish line but right now I'm thinking about going back to work and my brain isn't completely focused on this.

I sort of doubt that I will sell the F cimbasso, because I just doubt that there is a better one anywhere - and it's just so damned useful, and - if I sell the Holton 4+1 B-flat - it maybe reluctantly - yet it may not, as - by the time I sold those other things - I wasn't reluctant about selling them at all, even though they are remarkably fine instruments.

The first thing I ever stuck together and later sold was a 6/4 Holton 340 (B-flat) which - with pre-internet limited access to parts - I made into a 345 4+1 C. That instrument was later taken apart by someone else and made into something else, which was/is fine. It was a learning effort, and truth be told it wasn't a particularly good 340 B flat (pitchy, and no worse in C), and the C version played no worse in other ways either, so I really didn't ruin nor waste anything.

That's maybe several, but that's over decades so it isn't all that many.

I sold one off, and the buyer paid Unca Buruh to put it together for them.

I don't do builds, other than for myself. They consume hundreds of hours (at least to my personal standards), and (@ $1XX/hr.) I don't believe anyone is interested in paying me c. $25K (or whatever) to solve all of their projects' many dilemmas and assemble it for them...even were it that I were interested.

Here's something that I WILL do for people (which makes economic sense to people who like for their completed projects to look nice)...
I've been been willing to straighten out bells and bows for people (after they've disassembled their donor instrument/s), so that they're reasonably "pretty", and ready to be made into something that's going to look good. I reserve the right to refuse service, though (compound creases, cracks, other issues which define "junk/scrap" via my evaluation, etc.)

This is the one that I did for myself (decades ago...1990's). I didn't own it for long. An old guy (passing through town) went bonkers over it, I quoted an absurdly high price, and he pulled out cash. I (fairly) recently got it back. It was slightly screwed up (they had paid someone to spray lacquer over the satin silver, along with a few other screw-ups ), but I straightened it back out and re-sold it. This is a picture from AFTER I bought it back, and straightened it out to sell it once again:

The valveset is York, not King or some other paste-on...so the bore is only c. 21/32" (again: per York).

Update.. I talk myself into selling the york because of redundancy, but Goldendomer decided that now was not the right time to purchase another tuba (which is of course FINE!)

I will admitting to be a little torn on what to do with this tuba. As you remember, I was worried that buying the Norwegian star without a place to play an Eb would turn it into an expensive dust collector, and so far it's pretty much turned out that way. Except I have Two Eb dust collectors. It's hard to say which one is better. The Star is clearer, the Low E and D are perfect and free blowing, and the intonation is a bit better, but the york's intonation is surprisingly good. I built it with a main tuning slide rod, and I don't even use it

The york has a thicker, warmer sound of course, the 20 inch bell and thick brass is going to do that. It also has the advantage of being built by me, for me, so the leadpipe and valve section height and angle are perfect for me.

It's a much tougher call than I ever thought it would be.

I can afford to keep it, it's not about needing the money for either one. For the time being the york is in the Eastman 534 case I got back in March, which is too large to fit in my attic with every other hard case I own.

So this mean it's for sale? If someone really wanted it I could probably be talked out of it for $3000, but I'm not going to very active in trying to sell it.
