She's obviously very talented. And it was very well performed. But I just did not care for it. Then again, the whole event... Not the worst part....

I liked her performance a lot. To me, she came across as a sincere and patriotic American. This is a departure from my usual stance on public performances; e.g., the national anthem should always be played straight, by a military band. In this case, I would not look upon her arrangement as "pop music". Rather, it seemed almost operatic or big-scale Broadway ("Evita" ?) in character.

This was a fully arranged piece done with care. And while I’m of the opinion that they could’ve used a member of an armed forces band to perform this, since it is an official event, I’m also impressed by the arrangement and her approach. She is a talented woman.

No harmonizations nor orchestrations were written by God.
All were written by men, and all have been interpreted (and many borrowed/stolen/altered) by men.
This tune is stolen from an old British drinking song, called "The Anacreontic Song" (the official song of the Anacreontic Society - a "gentlemen's" club in London - an illustration of which is shown below).
She fit the song (featuring the superimposed words of a poem about the battle at Fort McHenry, called "Defence of Fort M'Henry") as closely to her style as possible.
I'd give her a 97% on tuning.
She actually sang it, did not pantomime a studio recording of herself, no "auto-tune" crap, and I seriously doubt anyone else could have sung any more in tune from that awkward spot (separated from the band) on a cold day.

I just now watched on youtube, since you brought my attention to it. I have enjoyed her outrageous stunts, along with her relatively private (ie. "no idiotic nor self-destructive behavior") personal life.

I would have chosen America, the Beautiful as the national anthem, as it had been written about 35 years prior to one being officially codified...but (well...other than off-to-the-side and the more "hip" Bix, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, and similar artists) music tastes (in the late 1920's) were sorta crappy, in my view. Who knows...?? Officially codifying this not-so-great song as the "national anthem" (in 1929) may well have brought on the Great Depression...(??)

I like Lady Gaga though I don’t at all agree with her politics. I have most of her albums. I have no comment on her performance.

I believe the singing of our national anthem to not be something performed that we watch; I believe it is a participatory event. I disapprove of any performance that discourages the public from joining in. Putting your personal stamp on it highly discourages participation.

Superbowl V, Tommy Loy on trumpet leading the entire stadium singing the anthem - and you can hear the crowd quite well.



No one sings the anthem anymore, not at high school, not at college, not anywhere. All part of the current “entertain me” mentality.

(Yes, I am an old man these days and getting grumpier by the minute)

Good grief, most of my comment above was because I saw "SSB" and somehow thought "Super Bowl." Of course an inauguration is a performance and not a sing-along time.

Curiously, most who are exposed to this "heavily stylized" version of this patriotic song seem to really like it...

I can always identify a Warner Bros. movie or short by the overuse of trumpets, the overbalance of trumpets and the trumpets' audio level (in the mix) "red-lining".



I don't dislike Berlin's song, but its style is very specifically dated (with the early 20th century rubato-verse-into-chorus thing happening), and (yes?) it's really (past the schmaltzy verse) much more of a march than it is an anthem.
Let's keep that song where it belongs...at the end of the big pre-rodeo extravaganzas - where the beautiful (often: bleached blonde) girl wearing the white cowboy hat riding a white horse - and carrying an unfurled American flag - gallops at top speed into the arena and back out - as the final "my hoooooooooome....sweeeeeeeeeet HOOOOOOOOOME !!!!" is heard over the P.A. system.
