DEG (Willson) Super Magnum GG contrabass bugle. It was likely in use in the very early 1990s when some corps experimented with four-banger contras before they decided the added weight wasn't worth it. I have wanted one of these for years.

The question is... Could it be converted to a york style valveset?

The auction title has been changed from "Bauerfeind" to "DEG Dynasty", so I'm fairly certain that I'm correct...as I've spent hours staring at Weril-made (local university inventory) caps and buttons, and their nickel-over-brass pistons...




I WILL say one thing for those .728" bore Weril sousaphone/contra pistons:
The porting (as with the Yamaha YCB-826S) is AMAZING...
Even though the stroke is short, the convex distortions are minimal.

Me, too. That is why I am sick about this one. I have been searching for this piston "cluster" for about ten years now. Finally, one free of the horn comes up for sale and I am on Unemployment for my teaching job and partial income from my almost-dormant orchestra job.

They are overpriced by about $250 based on condition, anyway. It's not really a loss, just a frustration. I would pay $300 for what is in the photos, maybe $350 if the leakage and wear were minimal. It does not really look that way to me, and hundreds spent on that with hundreds more having to go up to Seattle make them out of my league, money-wise. Still, with every knuckle being soft soldered into the casings (like King) and being fully replaceable/redirectable, with *very* well thought out tunnel shapes, these are some great project horn valves. You can set them up to be used in just about any bugle.

@the elephant Do you think this valveset would need a valvejob?

Without being able to physically examine them it is hard to say. My guess is that they would need a rebuild.

Weril pistons (during this era...and I believe I'm correct, regarding the "Weril" thing) were made of brass with very thin nickel plating...I would label it as "appearance" plating.

A good bit of brass is showing in the pictures, and (even if brand-new, and with no brass showing) I would personally have someone (Dan Oberloh, etc.) take them down slightly smaller and build them back up with considerably thicker nickel plating than the factory applied.

.728" is barely larger the Buescher tuba/sousaphone and Selmer, USA sousaphone bore size (which seem - ?? - to consistently measure out at - 93/128" - .726"). Not very many other instruments have been manufactured right there at the 18.5mm bore size, other than Yamaha and Eastman sousaphones.

The Yamaha sousaphone "valve block" (but only THREE valves) can be ordered - J0630500

The Jupiter FOUR-valve "valve block" is .736" (18.7mm) bore.

REPOSTED at a lower price and I included all slides ,crooks and tubing that I have from the original horn .

The design of those pistons defines them as worthy of a rebuild. The inclusion of the tubing and crooks is a plus.
