Herbert Jenkel LA Phil

So... Herbert Jenkel made the original recording of Tubby the Tuba. He played in the LA Phil during the early 1960s and took the tuba spot in the Cincinnati Symphony when William Bell left. He also played at the NBC symphony between Bell and Torchinsky (?).

Overall though, I can't find much on him. Does anyone have any insight on Mr. Jenkel or any pictures or can point me in the right direction?

You might also want to ask Dave Detwiler if he knows anything. I think most of his research is about Sousaphones and BBBb subcontrabass tubas, but nonetheless, he spends a lot of time with "old tuba stuff." Might be worth asking. I'm also not sure if someone like Bob Tucci might have more information? He's not from Jenkel's generation, but he's less separated from that generation...?

As far as the "Victory at Sea" stuff... as far as I know, it was either Joe Novotny or Herb Wekselblatt, depending on the date or cue. Novotny took over for Torchinksy in 1949 in the NBC Symphony, then went to the MET. He joined the NY Phil in 1961. Herb Wekselblatt took over for Novotny at the Met, until 1995.
