Sept. 2021 - Schubert 9: E♭ / B♭ / F trombones...

Our principal trombonist has a family event (wedding) out of state that they cannot miss, so - for Schubert's Symphony No. 9, next fall - our bass trombonist is moving up to (1st trombone) E-flat alto trombone, the 2nd trombonist is keeping his seat, and I'll be covering the bass trombone part on F cimbasso.

I feel lucky to get a chance to play some great literature with which - normally/otherwise - I would not be eligible to be included.

Due to the (seemingly) wall-to-wall-to-wall-to-wall-to-wall-to-wall-to-wall-to-wall trombone sonority in the texture, I'm going to treat my part as a bassoon part - UNLESS told to do otherwise (and I REALLY hope that I'm not told otherwise).

Definitely a lot of work to do in that for the section. Have fun!

A few little ditties (in the bass 'bone part) that seem to be designated as "solos", for what they are...

My favorite lick, though, is inside the texture, and is nothing more than a deliberately-played ascending C♯ (D♭) major arpeggio.

' curious if that will still be my favorite "lick" by the end of the reading rehearsal...

We dug through the entire symphony during the first rehearsal, actually worked on things, and didn’t just read it through.
It’s fun to sit in the trombone section and make nice chords. I’ve always liked making those chords with them on the tuba, but it’s just as much fun being actually in a section and making chords within in.
This stuff Isn’t hard, combining a really good instrument with sustained concentration (and a couple of great trombone players). I’m so stupid-lucky to have the instruments I have, and that a couple of them - that I stuck together - turned out so well. I don’t know crap about building instruments (beyond attention to detail and hunches), but I seem to be really lucky.
