Someone showed this to me yesterday.
It's gorgeous. How does a 35 year old tuba even look like this?
I think the price is a little high, but I don't know what the case/bag/etc situation is.

My 50 year old tuba looks like this, mostly. Aren’t they supposed to?

I'm not sure I agree - given the era, and the exterior condition, that price "feels" pretty close to me. Worst it will need is a good cleaning.

With all of this inflation (and geometrically more on the horizon), there are two possible strategies:
- Buy it now, before used prices exceed current new prices.
- Buy it later, when more people (due to far worse inflation...ie. hyperinflation) are desperate to pay their bills, but - by that time - you (the collective 'you") may be just as desperate.
...either: As long as an interested shopper is "good" with that length of 5th valve circuit, the price (per condition) seems OK to me...

Or 3.
Buy only what you actually need when you can afford it.

From what I understand, Bloke did the lead pipe and vented the valves on it some time ago along with a cleaning..

oh...ok...Is that the one...??
Someone else texted me and asked me what I remembered about it.
Here's what I remember about every instrument I've repaired - up until "just before lunch, today"...

"According to the owner" anyway. He said he also dropped it in the gig bag and dented the bow which was also fixed at the time. I suppose these horns all look the same at some point, but this nice of a 188 I would remember. Thumb Ring might run someone $75 though..

@bloke An instrument repairman is like a Priest, or Lawyer in this regard.
Publicly.
Or if subpoenaed.
But over coffee??

Back when three of us (all of whom ending up playing music for money during and immediately out of high school) were completely fascinated with trains, we walked up to an engine hostler at an L&N railroad - one time - and asked him what he thought of blah-blah model locomotive versus blah-blah model locomotive, etc., etc...
They’re big, they’re ugly, and they stink.
was his response.
If somebody says I worked on a tuba, chances are I probably did, but I wouldn’t base my own decision to buy a tuba on whether or not I had worked on it… Would any of you?
...and if I swapped out a mouthpipe, Miraphone tubas are the easiest of any make to swap out mouthpipes, because they are so incredibly consistent. New ones just lay right in place, and all anyone has to do is to solder them on.
