Wow. The fact that tuba players have no social lives seems to be intergenerational.

Seriously, that is a great photo. Are you sure it wasn't at the 1986 one held in Denton, where Dave Kirk played excerpts with the Houston trombones? I see some guys who were there in 1988, so eight years of undergrad seem like a long time, even at the "matriculation campground" that UNT has always been.

Warren just been awarded the NYPO job, and was there… You can see him in picture #3 (right hand third).
It was actually the year that Warren played excerpts with the Houston Symphony trombones (using a 345-C).
The only personal interaction I’ve ever had with Mr. Deck was there at a Miraphone booth at that shindig. He walked up and played a 184 and remarked about how they always play well (to Steve Yerkes). I think some other passerby made some remark about the Miraphone neoprene bumpers often being so hard, and - after he walked away - I told Steve that the reason was that - at that time - they were (obvious shortcut) lacquering over the neoprene bumpers, which made them much harder than they were, otherwise. I then recall him picking up his little voice recorder and making a “note to self” about that.
...It’s funny how we remember dumb stuff.

You’ll also notice Jim Self with his cimbasso thing, he did a lecture/demo with it, but (as I seem to recall...??) only played some funky bass line with it. He had some cutie name for it which incorporated part of his own name...”jimbasso”, maybe...(??)

I thought he won that gig in 1985. Oh, well. I correctly identified the photo, just blew it on the year.

EDIT: I have no idea why my post says "Dave Kirk" since those recordings are of Warren Deck (part of the Deck Special collection). Major brain fart on my part. Yes, I was speaking of Warren Deck's playing, not Kirk's. I for some reason read that those were recorded in 1986.

I got a copy of the NY list (when teaching at KU) so I had a "hook" on the year that occurred.
Also, I labeled the picture on the back.
Also, I'm now thinking that Warren may have already been playing in NY for most of a season (probably beginning in the fall of 1979) when this was taken, but (sure) came back and played excerpts with his old section.

I recognize others in this third of picture, but my basic editing program (ol "paint") is glitched up, and isn't allowing me to change the font size, and this large font was beginning to clutter the picture...

Is the person who I failed to name - possibly - John Stevens, or am I just stereotyping someone due to their beard...??

I'm also beginning to think that I may have misidentified someone as Harvey...

I also remember that Rich was there...I seem to remember some sort of "reception" early in the week.
He was there - towering over most others, with his kind voice also booming over most others.

Others will be able to label more people...

I think 1980 belongs to the 70s.

Personally that was the year that I started to explore a lot of options outside of the orchestral academic, band, tuba world. Maybe I channeled an Adam Smith "supply and demand" epiphany....
I do recall my most vivid memory of that symposium. After overdosing on too many tuba / euphonium [Besson] ensembles, I put my horn in my car went for a drive and found a lake and park then just played out in seclusion for a few hours. Funny how playing some music can be a blessing. I found I wanted to play by ear... so a couple of years of trial and error... I wound up doing the 80s equivalent of "running away with the circus" ... jet setting with blues men of south Louisiana.
I'm truly grateful for all of that camaraderie, life, knowledge & MUSIC!!!

Thanks Bloke for posting the pics. Funny that symposium left me with so few distinct memories,
yet the photo prompted memories of... digging for my spirit.

Both funk and disco were at their peak.
It was very "in"to say "disco sucks", but (well...) Donna Summer certainly didn't.

' funny how (years after that era) I was able to play the most-broadcasted (of both genres) by ear (typically "big-rock-band-but-no-sheet-music" gigs) just from being exposed to so much radio airplay of those tunes...

WHER Y'AT ?

I was there; I didn't know our paths had crossed so closely (same row about 5 chairs apart). I am in the 3rd pic, last person on the right end of the last seated row. I was teaching Jr. high band and had brought several of my JH tuba students with me (to my right and between you (bloke) and me). That day I played a little school-owned 3/4 York Master BBb that I had bought used. PIcs are a little fuzzy but I believe that is Rex Conner standing immediately behind you and to your right. I see David Kuehn in the 1st pic, standing in the back at far left. They were my teachers; I didn't attend North Texas, but Mr. Kuehn took me on as a private student while I was finishing my degree at little Tarleton State about 90 miles away. I may still have a program from that but will have to hunt for it. Yes, Harvey Phillips was there, and I remember him getting pretty emotional introducing his (required) performance of "Come Sweet Death" to honor Bill Bell. A good memory for me and an experience my young students never forgot. Thanks for posting this.

Responding to Bloke's pic: Isn't the "can't quite remember his name" guy John Stevens? and the guy in front from east Tennessee is George Jones, one of my first teachers (he was a grad student at NTSU, not the C&W crooner).

I was definitely at this conference, but sure can't find myself in any of these pictures.

I spent some serious time with Rex Connor (about five years previous to this picture being taken), and I just can’t make that into Rex Connor, though I believe he was there. Though the person in the picture is out of focus, it just looks a little bit young-ish to be Rex at that time period...but I am probably wrong.

Bloke, cccording to what you said some time ago, our paths must have crossed before that at the 1974 convention in Knoxville. Small world. I'm not sure but that you are right about Conner. I studied with him at UK in 73-74 (got my degree in 3 semesters), and he came to Texas several times to meetings and to visit with me and my wife. We were pretty close with Rex and Alberta. I saw the lack of hair, the glasses, and the "owlish" look in the pic, but I'm not quite convinced that is him. And I don't recall him ever wearing a Leisure Suit (for those of you who remember those). But as I remember, he was there in Denton. He also came to Austin for convention about 1986, which I think was the last time I saw him.

yeah… I could believe that he was there, but I just don’t think that’s him.
