Are there any recommendations out there for a safe, environmentally friendly de-greaser that I can use to clean horns at home?

This stuff from the WD-40 folks has an EPA "Safer Choice" certification.

Dawn is great as a degreaser and several formulations are available to meet specific needs. Some brushing and light scrubbing on inner surfaces may be required to loosen stubborn spots. It won't work on calcified deposits. That requires a descaler. The best thing about Dawn soap is that it goes down the drain without the need to be neutralized or treated.

We also use a product from Hill Chemical called Enviro that is a great cleaner for removing buffing compound. Citrus degreasers will also do the job but there are varying strengths that will provide different results.

I’ve always thought of “duh Fonz“ as duh ultimate greaser.

A few years ago (okay, 32 years), in the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Dawn got a lot of positive publicity because is was the solvent of choice for environmental volunteers who were hand-cleaning sea otters, seals, and water fowl. If Dawn can remove crude oil from living creatures safely, I think it is a good degreaser for brass. My instruments always seemed happy when they got a Dawn bath.

Until one or two decades ago, there used to be an affordable large bottle of dishwashing liquid that was solid yellow plastic with green lettering, cylindrical, and featured facets all the way around the bottle. That stuff was incredible - and tougher than Dawn, but it disappeared from the shelves.

“Octagon”, IIRC.

It was good stuff, I haven’t seen it in awhile either.

The yellow bottle with green writing liquid dishwashing detergent that cut grease better than Don, was very large bottle, and low priced was (is?) called Crystal White / Octagon.

I see that Yorkboy remembered right about the same time that Mrs. bloke did.
