There are very, very few things in my life that I could not replace if I was offered full replacement (retail) value for them in exchange for giving them up and paying a deductible. If someone offered me anything close to full retail for my horns, as much as I like them they would be gone before the sounds of the words left my ear drums. This is why I never worry about leaving them in a car in plain sight, but I don't use them to make a living or support myself (which completely changes the context for me).

I’ve played enough that are supposed to be “like“ mine that I don’t think I want to go through trying to replace them.
Mine aren’t insured, but either I’m not letting them out of my sight, or I’ll hide them in the backs of my cheap manual shift cars.

' anyone click on those video cams of landfall (two posts above) ??

You gotta be kidding or out of your mind.
Remind me not to move to wherever you live :-)

There's nothing in my car - by design - that leads anyone anywhere, including the registration which is in my wallet. My general area is pretty safe and relatively secluded. IF my horn got stolen it would be a major pain in the ass logistically, for sure, but the finances would work out in my favor in the long run based on the coverage I carry and I feel like I'm really good at picking horns at this point. There's a reason it's called "peace of mind".

In my (average: nine people per acre) rural county, the rare armed robbery typically (yes: typically) results in the hospitalization or death of the perpetrator. A recent one was actually staged, whereby robber and the clerk were in cahoots, but the robber still ended up in the hospital in critical condition – shot by police and deputies, because someone else called it in, and those police and deputies stay in those more densely populated portions of our county - where gas stations are located.
There are burglaries, but burglars here know that nearly everyone has dogs, is armed, and is a good shot.
If stopping at a gas station for coffee or at the post office on the way to a gig in an urban area, I might leave my instruments showing in my vehicle in MY county for five minutes - with the vehicle locked.
There is NO WAY that I would do that EVER, in the cities where I go play jobs. In fact, I don’t stop at any types of businesses whatsoever in those cities and only go to the venues and return home…and always make certain that I have a enough gas in my tank - upon entering those areas - to get back out of them.
Finally - and just for clarification - my county does have a Walmart, a Kroger, and quite a few sit-down restaurants - mostly clustered in one town. There is no way in hell that I would leave my instruments showing in my vehicle, and go into those places (for even 1 minute) to shop or eat.
As a post script, we do have facebook and next-door reports of “a man and his son driving slowly down the road in their pick-up truck“. People like that are risking their lives, and always end up getting caught, here.

Different strokes for different folks. Like I said, if someone offered me insurance replacement value (retail) minus my insurance deductible (fairly low) for either of my horns they'd be out the door the same day no questions asked. Not that I don't like them - I like them a LOT, and both are excellent examples of their models. Perhaps my Wessex 6/4 is unique, being a prototype with no serial number, but I've played enough other horns to know that with some patience and work I could replace what I use it for when I play. The space shuttle tile I have? Can't be replaced.

For the car, I've been through all that stuff before - plus accidents, major mechanical failures... you name it. No one wants to deal with hassles, but, I don't sweat them anymore because they usually work out. Doesn't mean I look for them, it's just something that has to be dealt with. I can replace a car. I can replace a tuba. I can't replace a bad back or make my kid 5 years old again, but I would if I could. The value of THOSE things is much, much higher.

Rob there are some horns that really can't be replaced, but I get what you're saying. Like that $17,500 6/4 Rudy at BBC right now, if that got stolen out of your car it would be a tragedy. Same thing with your 188, that would be devastating even if you got the money for them.

I'm with Rob, it's only a tuba, they made more.

And let's be real... I'm only keeping it a few years anyway. If I don't sell it, someone stealing it is just getting me to the "next tuba" stage a little bit sooner.

The instruments that I chosen to own (and not sell, and forgo enjoying a cash profit from them)…I’m drawn to them.
When I walk past them, it’s a bit difficult to not pick them up and play them…
…not so with known to be “good” instruments that I’ve passed at displays (back when we had civilization and shows and stuff).
It is a paradox, is it not, that the places where there is the most sophistication in civilization - where we can be paid to play classical music – are the same places where there is the very least sophistication in civilization – where we are the most likely to have our property stolen or to be assaulted or murdered…(??)

I'm not LOOKING to get rid of my 188 by any means - BUT if someone knocked on my door and handed me a bag with $11,000 (insurance neighborhood after deductible) in it they'd walk away with a really nice 188 and a Superfine leather gig bag. I DO plan on keeping that horn and pimping it up, but if it left I'd be able to replace it and have a really cool story to tell. I'd be MUCH more upset if the 188 Tommy Johnson owned that was for sale a year and a half ago got stolen. So yeah, there's unique and there's really good and I get the distinction.

Insurance companies are happy to accept premiums for whatever high value an insured wishes to place on something, but – when it comes time to settle - they become quite practical, investigate serial numbers, age, find comparables, and offer to either buy the insured a comparable, or give the insured the money for comparables that they find for sale.
Most used 188 tubas are offered for far less than $11,000…ex: $6500 or so…
… but again: they are delighted to except premiums based on $11,000 coverage.

Depends on the policy and the carrier. The specifics are in the language, but, suffice to say it's in the paperwork that the payout would be the number in the policy, minus the deductible, for a total loss. No, it's not Clarion :-) but you can shop and negotiate these things. The fact that we also have 2 oboes, an English Horn, and 2 Violas (one of which is the most expensive instrument in the house) under the same policy gave us a little bargaining power.

I hope you don’t ever need to put the quality of your insurance to the test.

:facepalm2: I really can't understand how a rational adult tuba player tolerates not one, but TWO violas, in their household. :facepalm2:
