YEB-381 5th circuit

If a few years ago, I drove about 2 1/2 hours to meet someone - who drove from about the same distance from the other direction - to sell me one of those things.

I smoothed it out, cleaned it up, and sold it to someone who is very happy with it. While getting it ready for sale, I noticed that the fifth circuit was a very odd length which didn’t make any sense (to me…) no matter how I tried to rethink its designed purpose.

I gave up on trying to make sense of it, and lengthened it to the common “whole tone in tune with the fourth valve depressed“ length.

I was just curious if someone owns one of these things that has NOT been altered, and if they figured out a useful way to employ the factory-length fifth circuit. … or – simply – did Yamaha just make that circuit too short?

(I am thinking that – prior to me altering it – it was simply an UNcompensated whole tone length.)

It's my understanding that when a company uses the long half step 5th valve (Yamaha, cerveny) they are only trying to give better options for a sharp 2-4 combination and possibly 2-4-5 for the note right below it. They frankly don't care about making a full chromatic instrument. That might be ok for a CC tuba, not acceptable for an Eb. If you're going to add the 5th valve, give me at least a long whole step

Yes. If you have a 5th valve you are allowed to join the union and pay dues. If you own a tux you get a free copy of the International Musician and a set of steak knives. True story.

I recall trying to figure out if it was meant to be an adjusted semitone, but it just wasn’t that either…It was twilight zone-ish.

I could not locate the apology button, so I clicked the thank button.

I just don’t get the non-compensating four valve thing for E-flat:

I guess I really don’t get the four-valve non-compensating thing - for most any length of brass instrument- without some (is this case: actual) triggers.

That was the Cb attachment.
