Greyhound vs. Apple AirTag

Given the recent thread about AirTags, I decided to give it a try. I have a tuba going from SoCal across the country.

Here is a picture before it went into the box (AirTag under the tape by handle) :

Seems to be working as it just passed into Arizona

They seem to like to stop at Love’s Travel Stops:

Excellent, though I would have packed it into the case so it could not be accidentally torn off. These transmit through the steel body of vehicles just fine, so adding a plastic-shelled tuba case would not be an issue, I think. Its pings *are* being received by nearby iPhones through the bus's steel and aluminum cargo hold…

Of note, everyone with an AirTag-capable iPhone who is ON the bus is receiving regular notifications that an unknown AirTag is traveling with them. This is to prevent people from stalking others by hiding an AirTag on their person or in their car.

I wonder if anyone has reported this to the driver. HAHAHA!!!

Oh, and no one can see the tag's location unless they have physically paired their device with it. You can show us all the screenshots in the world, but no one can "find" it without your giving them the most recent screenshot; they cannot see it at all. (Unless it is traveling with them, and then they still cannot "see" it, but only know it is somewhere in their vehicle, perhaps in some crazy person's tuba case…

Here's another similar product:

https://landairsea.com/products/landairsea-54

I considered this (I think it was this one?) a few years ago when I bought a tuba located in Venezuela. It's not cheap, but 1) this was a few years ago before AirTags existed and 2) I don't have an iPhone (and this would be cheaper as a one-time use than buying an iPhone).

This is what shipbikes.com uses for their tracking.

I "like" using "quotes", too !

I might go back to using Greyhound - in combination with "those".

(The last tuba that I sold - that had to be shipped - cost $300 freight - with a "discount"...and I do NOT like forklifts being used to haul tubas around warehouses at 20 mph !!! :gaah: I don't believe Greyhound needs forklifts to load luggage into two-feet-high luggage doors.)

The only "tags" that I have ever had were in my armpits.

~I decided for its maiden voyage to try the outside of the case, but it is nestled in the hollow of the handle so should be protected.

~I thought I read that people would get a notification about the AirTag after a set number of hours that it is "following" them. I thought I read 8 hours.

~Yes, it might make a few people crazy. I figured that if it looks like it is approaching an FBI building, I'll disconnect from it.

~Those screen shots were a couple hours old when I posted them, just to remove the temptation for @the elephant to take an unscheduled road trip.

We'll see what happens.

What size are these? Would this work to put on a dog/cat collar? I'm constantly seeing things on phone poles about lost dogs or cats...

Are you referring to Apple's AirTags or *ahem* Britney's?

The first was a stock photo. I took this one. They are sort of chunky, between the OD or a quarter and half dollar, about as thick as three quarters.

Thanks!

I love the look of these, but it is kind of funny that they're so pretty, for something that just ends up being concealed. I assume that over time, the size will change and they will become more useful as well. I should probably stick these on everything I own!

(^Talking about the AirTags, ya dirty-minded creeps, lol)

yep...
They seem really handy for retrieving stolen property, as long as you bring along Bubba, Billy, Bobby, Benny, Daryl, and Daryl, Jr. (who can all put a clean hole in a persimmon @ 2500', and who are more se¢ret!ve than the $e¢ret $erv!¢e).

Is the driver's name Manny? He's saying for $100 and lunch I can take the tuba case and no one will know  This is a good idea though, the only drawback is when your horn gets stuck in Timbucktwo (farther than you can really drive to get it or do anything about it) you still have to find a live person at that location and GOOD LUCK now. If you thought GH was bad before..you haven't seen anything.

I think the main point of doing this tracking is for insurance purposes. Makes filing a claim a bit easier since you’d have additional evidence of loss.

Also, retrieval would be easier if one involved the local authorities since you’d at least have a starting point for the search.

Going to retrieve stolen goods on your own from a criminal is a rather poor idea.
