OK, I am of the persuasion that the Mirafone C4 mouthpiece of old is the same as the new Miraphone TU23 mouthpiece. Is a stainless steel equivalent available for these mouthpieces.

If there is, I'd also like to know about it. I know Ivan Giddings can fab a stainless version up if you mailed him the original, but it's going to be super expensive.

I wouldn’t say the TU 23 is the same. I have an old C4 I used on my F tuba for years. I would say the Baer MMVI F is close, but still quite different. I use a Sellmansberger Solo #0 with a WM 32.6 rim, it is a zippier sound but the cup is the same

Even Miraphone calls the TU-23 the new version of the C-4:

Although, I'm sure there are variations over the years, just like with any hand-turned mouthpieces, Bach 18 being the most notorious for inconsistency.

Honestly if you're looking for a "C4" and don't HAVE TO have a Miraphone product, the Schilke 69C4 is the closest and next best thing. Same rim, roughly the same cup, same throat bore just wider at 32.76mm roughly. A tad cheaper retail as well. If I was going to have Giddings cut me a stainless custom, it would be based off that 69C4 I think.

Several. Take your pick of both rims and backbores.

I was wondering for Schlep if Joe had an approximation that might work that's similar to the C4 in cup and rim. I'm not personally interested. I like the C4 about as much as I like the 24AW. :eyes:

There’s a Houser C4 LA rim that’s a copy of the C4 rim. I’d have to look at the cup profiles, but there’s probably something in that lineup that gets pretty close the medium depth of the C4.

My own version of a Miraphone-style (wide rounded) rim is my W-M. (available in a few inside diameters, limited to 2" on the outside, which is the o.d. of the stainless steel cylinder material, from which they are cut).

I sent Wayne a list of Sellmansberger parts that comes the closest to a C-4 / TU-23.

As always, if there is any interest, please purchase them from me.

@bloke can you PM me what combination you have that comes close to the C4?

It's the same. I own both.

Yes, but is there a Stainless Steel replacement?

I have a Blokepiece that I checked with Joe and is a very similar match. I really like both mouthpieces but I prefer the rim of the Blokepiece. I am in the process of testing between the two. It's a tough call but I think the Blokepiece will win out.

I have one, and yes the rim cushion and throat bore are the same. The bowl is not however. It's more funnel shaped and deeper. Great mouthpiece, makes all your contrabass tubas sound really dark for some reason. I might..be willing to let mine go though.

I already have one.

This probably doesn't sound like the world's greatest salesmanship, but (perhaps?) the most salient point - regarding my modular mouthpiece (whereby three particular components are pretty darn close to a Miraphone C4/TU-23) - is that the wide/very round rim can be replaced with something else. :eyes:

I believe I've altered that basic (wide/rounded) rim style to be as comfortable and as useful as possible, but that doesn't mean that I'm personally fond of it.
