I play on most of the numbers - except for a few, but also count measures - as with any tuba thing.
I began to wonder what the tubas looked like that were used to play this music in Russia, when it was first written.
Phone/google/non-research showed me something like this:

Is there anyone who actually knows something about tubas in Russia in 1890, who could talk about them and educate us here ?

The whole thing is a set up for the bass clarinet to play five notes.
Iām OK with that.

There are actually ā believe it or not ā some bass trombone and tuba intervals that are not octaves.

I pondered some similar thoughts in Gilbert and Sullivan pit orchestras (they have dialogue between songs, and while there were tubas at the time, Sullivan's pits apparently didn't feel the need for them. Perhaps he was afraid they would overpower the singers?
