Why do they keep designing new models that aren’t of any use?
We serious artistes all need 6/4 five-valve plastic C tubas - and that weigh a scant 20 pounds.

And it MUST have a York leadpipe and .750 valves. Anything else is garbage.

I mean, after all, if Chevy can use plastic for the intake manifold for the turbo of my Sonic, why not a tuba? They seem to be about the same displacement and produce similar pitches out the back with the factory hot-rod kit, which I have on mine.

If they would just make a plastic clone of the NStar with quiet valves, I'd get one. But I heard Mark Nelson play the BBb version a few years ago in his recital, and while its "tuba sound" was acceptable, the clicking of the valves put it totally out of the running for anything except kids who would likely break a "real" tuba. This one at least you can glue back together.

Actually they're rather fragile, from what I've read. Brass actually has better strength to weight, than plastics like ABS, PET, polypropylene, so to make it as strong, you'd have to forego the light weight. (I don't have any real knowledge of these matters, and I suppose at least there's more to it when you consider the nature of failures etc., but that's what the chart seems to say.) Carbon fiber is much stronger at light weight, but I think that isn't a practical material for small parts like the valve mechanism.

I’ve never thought of plastic is really lightweight, except for when it’s super thin and disposable.
When they started making white sousaphones out of that weird resin - and stopped making them out of fiberglass, they went from light to heavy - and from indestructible to brittle.

It’s Jason , but I’ve only printed with PLA (I don’t even know what that stands for but is what beginning ‘users’ of 3D printers use).

I was just pointing out that would be one way to make valves out of carbon fiber. I’m not saying it’s a good idea…
