Upcoming in March, there was a conflict, and I had to choose between Tchaik IV and Dvorak IX.

Being a professional - NEVER an artiste - and after very thoughtful consideration/deliberation - I choose... mo' money.

Since I lack the sensitivities and sensibilities of an artiste, I'm asking for advice (as this is an issue over which we - so often - wring our hands, particularly when it is patently obvious that our music directors couldn't possibly care less.

I'm already sure which instrument will be dragged on stage for this oh-so-vital-to-"The Music" excerpt, but - hey - It's ALWAYS fun to poll the freak jury, yes?

I've never played an Eb tuba, but I have to imagine there would be nothing more rewarding than sitting quiet, getting cold, and then coming in on that E natural on the Besson.

But the cool kids said they would kick me out of their club if I did.

Someone sent me an interesting twitter-hosted video, today, of a GWN "hero" stealing a flag from a 13-year-old girl, and that "hero's" subsequent fate. It was telling, if not humorous. I have absolutely idea whether the "hero" or the girl play the tuba or like Dvorak.

I'd love to see it done on the sparkly sousaphone.

But if you aren't that daring, take the BBb and put a rich, clear bottom on that chorale. You don't really need the large 5450 for those 14 notes, unless you just like how it blends/fits with the group. And you wouldn't have to do much work to keep up. The Symphonie would have great tone, but is it large enough? An Eb would likely be just fine, but does it really have that BBb warmth and presence? How big is the group? Who are the players? What fits best with them? Does the conductor like traditional American sound or something else? Or does he care? Do you get additional cartage with a bigger tuba?

At over $60/note, the tuba player needs them...

It’s been a long time since I’ve read about various composers, and I may have him mixed up with someone else…
… but I’m thinking that she had a much prettier sister, but he had to settle for this one, for some reason.
