Re: Going to Chicago
I just loved doing that show! Some nice exposed parts allowed a chance to show through a little. I did the split upright bass/tuba book and negotiated a nice doubling fee. Enjoy

Re: Going to Chicago
…so AFTER for the last tour finally came to an end, they decided to put the book in Finale…?!?!
—————————-
So far, I’ve done three different runs with that show (back when it was touring - or is it touring yet again?) …
first time:
I worked on disciplining myself to not watch what was going on on stage, so I would not miss entrances.
second time:
Even though it’s all “Tin Pan Alley”, there are actually quite a few sub-styles within that genre, and I concentrated on different types of attacks, note lengths, and decays - which are appropriate with the individual numbers.
third time:
I decided that I was not going to make a single sound on my instrument whereby I heard the drummer playing even a millisecond before me.
The book is easy, but it’s also fun, and - as demonstrated above - there are things offered within it that we can utilize to improve ourselves.

Re: Going to Chicago
Lots of fun playing here! I even have my own mic! Last time I did it I did the split part as well, but there’s no room for a bass in the pit (or backstage) so it’s all on tuba.Tim Jackson wrote: ↑Tue Mar 29, 2022 10:47 pm I just loved doing that show! Re: Going to Chicago
There was one lick in the bass book I just could not handle. Somehow the conductor knew it was just not in my wheelhouse and choose not to grill me on it. Some kind of 16th note run downward. I do well in jazz situations (pizz) but on shows sometimes an occasional arco passage will put me in my place.

Re: Going to Chicago
You’re likely talking about a lick in the trial scene. The conductor cut those two measures, to my everlasting gratitude.Tim Jackson wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 7:36 pm There was one lick in the bass book I just could not handle. Re: Going to Chicago
Done it twice. Fun show. First time I had to cover the string bass book AND the tuba book, so lots of notes. I hate Roxie. She can kiss my *ss. That song just went on, and on, and on and it really did need to be soft and bass-like or it didn't fit the scene. Second time it was just the tuba book, not as interesting but I was glad to sit and watch Roxie.
