i picked my 186 up this afternoon from Dustin of the Music/Arts store in Louisville. The instrument now plays like it should. the stuffiness and intonation problems are gone (with the removal of that PURPLE TIE!), all the clickety clacks of the valves are gone. i've only gotten to play it a few minutes... and can tell a big difference. my wife says it sounds like a euphonium... i guess that's a good thing? not sure

he went way beyond the call of duty assisting me in getting the instrument to him and picking it up.

BTW the Eb trigger was bent, Dustin rebent it to the correct position. The 2nd valve slide doesn't seem to be pushing out now, maybe the tie stuck inside was causing more compression there?

All the stuffiness is gone, the horn plays in tune.. Before, the middle of the staff was really FLAT.

Quiet smooth valves...

I've never had a 5 valve horn, what is the 5th valve supposed to be tuned to? I always tuned the 4 to C and F. The 5th on this one seems like it prefers F?

On a 188, I had it set up for low F (Eb on Bb) to be a smidge flat and then, iirc, low E was just a hair sharp 5/4 and low D was really close 2/3/4/5.

An addendum to my prior post…

Low F on a 188 would be played 5/2/3. I set it up flat so that I could lean on it and it would typically float up to pitch. For a soft/light low F, I’d use 1/4 with a pull on first.
